Brighouse Boundary Walk: from Elland Lower Edge to Cooper Bridge

This is the route that I took on Monday August 16th 2021 when walking the Brighouse Boundary Walk from Elland Lower Edge to Cooper Bridge. It is 10.2K long.

Here are some photos I took. If you want to see a photo in hi-res, click on it.

En-route from the bus stop to rejoining the BBW, I pass a section of unmanned road works where the traffic lights are permanently on red at both ends of the road works much to the frustration of unknowing motorists but makes an amusing start to today's walk along the BBW which begins up Church Lane in Elland Lower Edge.

I should have gone down this path which is marked on my maps as Toothill Lane South. According to my maps, this path is not a public right of way. It's marked on the OS Map with green dots which means "other route with public access". I comment further on this below. Looking at my maps I decide to avoid this nettled path. I even got stung on the arm by a nettle whilst taking this photo! Looking back this sign indicates that it's a Public Footpath. My guess is that before the construction of the M62 the nettled path (that I avoided earlier that is S of the M62) continued to this path (that is N of the M62). The whole length is marked on the OS Map with green dots which means "other route with public access". You can see that on this OS map. It may be the whole length is in the council's "List of Streets". This is a list of highways which often have public acces but which are not public rights of way. Although you may not consider the nettled path and this path do not look like a "street", I know of another similar looking highway (that is part of the Oxfordshire Way) that is not a public right of way but is in the Oxfordshire List of Streets. I might e-mail the council to find out whether this is the case here - interestingly two councils are involved as I think the nettled path is in Kirklees where this path is in Calderdale!

I see this stone adjacent to the tow path. It's labelled "LYR". I guess this stands for "Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway" and Googling whilst walking I find that indeed the LaYR was a major railway company before the railway companies were grouped in 1923 and that the Halifax to Leeds railway line was in fact one of those of the LaYR. The railway line is just a few hundred yards away from this stone which presumably marks the boundary of the company's land.
