BCN: from Horseley Fields Junction (HFJ), WV1 3DT to Sneyd Junction (SnJ), WS3 2LT

This is the route that I took on Wednesday April 17th 2019 when walking the BCN from Horseley Fields Junction (HFJ), WV1 3DT to Sneyd Junction (SnJ), WS3 2LT. It is 11K long.

The first part of this holiday is along the Wyrley and Essington Canal which has a Wikipedia page. It was originally 24M long extending from Horseley Fields (near Wolverhampton) to Huddlesford Junction (on the Coventry Canal near Lichfield).

The Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust also provide web pages about the Canal. It includes this map.

The Canal has the nickname "Curly Wyrley" because it's a contour canal. The Pearson's guide says "its fidelity to [following] the 473ft contour was absolute until Ogley [Junction] beyond which there were no less than thirty locks in the seven mile stretch down to Huddlesford". These days the Canal is navigable from Horseley Fields to Ogley Junction (OJ). And I plan to walk that during the next three days.

Here are some photos I took. If you want to see a photo in hi-res, click on it.

For this holiday, I'm staying at a hotel in Birmingham. I start my holiday with a train trip from Birmingham to Wolverhampton followed by a short walk to the start of the W&E canal. This is at Horseley Fields Junction where the W&E branches off the Birmingham Canal, the canal that goes from Birmingham to Wolverhampton.
I'm not expecting to see many boats as I walk along the W&E Canal as April is at the start of the holidaymaker's boating season and the Pearson's guide says "the 'Curly Wyrley' remains an unloved canal, and one rarely boated".
However, it's a great start to the walk because as I arrive at Horseley Fields Junction, there's a boat turning off the Birmingham Canal to go along the W&E Canal.

The boat (which is just behind me) also goes past it without it flying off. Me thinks I was conned as it's probably made of wood!

This is Sneyd Junction. The Pearson's guide says "from Sneyd branch canals once proceeded northwards to a number of remote colliery basins". In this photo that's straight on but these days that arm almost immediately ends. The main arm of the W&E Canal goes right at this junction - it goes under the bridge.
