Calder and Hebble: from Cooper Bridge to Dewsbury

This is the route that I took on Saturday September 28th 2019 when walking the Calder and Hebble from Cooper Bridge to Dewsbury. It is 11.9K long. The route needs to be chopped at its end because I forgot to save the route before getting on the bus/train.

	The walk along this bit of the Calder and Hebble Canal starts at Cooper Bridge Junction. The Canal comes from behind me along the River Calder and then goes left whereas the river continues straight on. You can go further along the river if you wish to go along the Huddersfield Broad Canal as the junction for that canal is not far away. This is all explained on the signboard that's at the junction. 	There's a flood lock at the start of this section of the Calder and Hebble Canal. 	This is the bridge that carries the railway line from Sowerby Bridge to Dewsbury. 	There's a junction ahead where the Canal goes off right.. 	Behind the bridge, you can see the orange buoys "preventing" boats from carrying straight on along the river as the canal goes right - you can just see the white flood gate. 	The Canal is about to join the River Calder again. This signboard says that red means proceed with caution. 	There's a railway embankment next to the towpath. 	And the railway used to cross to the other side of the Canal.. Pearson's Guide says there used to be "an impressive Warren Truss girder bridge carrying the London and North Western Railway's 'Leeds New Line'". 	Conveniently, this road route to the next bit of the towpath is indicated in the Pearson's Guide. It passes the Kingdonm Hall of the Jehovah Witnesses. 	This bit of the Calder and Hebble is known as Mirfield Cut (as it passes through Mirfield). 	Although this translates as "Obstinate Tom", the boat is probably named after a mound that lies at a summit of a hill that's in South Wales. 	The Mirfield Cut ends here as the Canal rejoins the River Calder. 	Once again there is no towpath and the Pearson's Guide indicates a route to use to get to the next secion of the towpath. It's quite a long detour that starts by turning left before the Sun Inn. 	Then there's bridge 34. The Pearson's Guide says "Pearson's prestigious prize for the Most Irrational Bridge Numbering Sequence is perennially awarded to the Canal and River Trust's North East Waterways. It would be easier to predict the winning sequence of the National Lottery."
