Calderdale Way: from Cragg Vale to Todmorden

This is the route that I took on Wednesday September 22nd 2021 when walking the Calderdale Way from Cragg Vale to Todmorden. It is 9.7K long.

	Day 3 of walking the Calderdale Way starts in Cragg Vale which is at 190m. This village's big claim to fame is that it's at the end of a steep road climb. This web page says "Cragg Vale from Mytholmroyd on the B6138 road proudly claims to be the longest continual ascent in England - it's 968 feet of climbing in 5.5M - it is not steep, just a classic long drag - a power climb with an average gradient of just over 3%." 	The first 2K of Day 3's walk along the CDW is on tarmac. 	Having looked at the map, I know there's a reservoir ahead. This is the first sign of the reservoir as the horizontal line is the dam wall. The CDW now moves away from the reservoir going N for a bit before a long stretch going W. Most of today's route is westwards. 	Today's wettest bit of the walk! Just after this the CDW goes through a gap in the wall. After the gap the path has the wall is on its left. 	This disused building has been visible for the last few K and when it's reached the CDW goes North briefly and then due West. 	Today's stretch of the CDW ends in Todmorden which is now in view. Before that it reaches Mankinholes (which is on the right) and Lumbutts (which is on the left). 	I discover there's no obvious path for the next 0.3K. 	Looking at my online version of an OS map the CDW takes a line that's right of the ravine that's on the left and according to my online version of the OpenStreetMap map it goes along the side of the wall that's in the distance. 	It's tedious for the next 12 minutes. To avoid twisting my ankle I have to go slowly because sometimes my foot lands in a hole that's maybe a foot deep. I learn that the white grass doesn't have holes. And so it's best to aim for the white patches. I find it strange there's no evidence that anyone has been this way. I keep confirming with my mobile phone that I'm on the route of the CDW as given by the GPX file and also on the route of a public right of way as given in the data provided by Calderdale Council. So it's keep going straight on - just do it slowly!
