The Chesterfield Canal goes Eastwards from Chesterfield to West Stockwith (which is between Gainsborough and Scunthorpe). At West Stockwith, the Canal joins the River Trent. Wikipedia says "the Canal opened in 1777" and that "it is 47M long". About 38M of the Canal is currently navigable. Restoration work is being done by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. Their web page says "since 1989, 12M of the canal have been restored along with 37 locks and 11 bridges - 2 new marinas have been built." Enthusiastically, their web page also says "there are less than 9M miles left to restore". This is the bit from Staveley to Kiveton - my view is that it's a lot of work to restore this section. Their web page says "we have set ourselves a target of 2027 for the completion of the restoration because this is the 250th Anniversary of the opening of the canal". Wow!
In two of the weeks of March 2019, I walked the route of the Canal.
In the first week, I walked the bit from Chesterfield to Shireoaks (near Worksop). This includes the 9M section that needs to be restored. I decided to walk it starting from Chesterfield as the weather forecasts for the days of my first week were for gale force winds coming from the West. There's a long distance path alongside the Canal called the "Cuckoo Way" but in the 9M unrestored section I found that it didn't have many waymarks. waterwayroutes.co.uk have produced a free detailed map showing the Canal from Chesterfield to Kiveton. This web page has a link that goes to this PDF that shows the map. In my daily blog about walking the canal, I refer to this map as "#mymap". I found the map interesting as it indicates how the Trust plan to restore the 9M.
In the second week of my two weeks of walking, I walked from Shireoaks to West Stockwith.
On another waterwayroutes web page,
waterwayroutes.co.uk provide a map of the whole of the Canal - it costs 4 pounds.
Here are links to web pages giving more details about each day's walking. Each of these web pages has a map and some photos:
