Kirklees Way: from Birstall to Thornhill (close to Batley and Dewsbury)

This is the route that I took on Tuesday December 24th 2019 when walking the Kirklees Way from Birstall to Thornhill (close to Batley and Dewsbury). It is 15.8K long.

	Day 4 and it's the longest day so far as I'm planning to do 13.5K. So I set off early and arrive in Birstall at about 0755. I was planning to stay on the bus for a couple of more stops and then walk to the start of the day's walk. But it's pitch black. Sunrise is at about 0820. So I get off the bus at the Market Place and go to a coffee bar called the Cobbles - I have an excellent bacon, mushroom and tomato sandwich and a coffee. I then catch a later bus to the start of today's walk which is where Leeds Road meets Nab Lane. 	After a bit of tarmac, the KW uses this brambled footpath ... 	... to descend to this footbridge over the Howley Beck - the Beck marks the Kirklees boundary and so the next bit of the KW is in West Yorkshire. 	I have a chat about the mud with this runner - he seems to be wearing road shoes - he's aware of the mud but prefers to run it because if he cycles it he'll have to clean the cycle afterwards! 	After I pass through the tunnel a TransPennine express train passes. 	The KW continues to keep the Howley Beck company as it's just to the right of the path. 	The KW uses this not very exciting footpath between two industrial estates. 	This photo shows the Mount Pleasant stadium in Batley - Wikipedia says it's "a rugby league stadium which is the home of Batley Bulldogs". 	Originally a textile factory, the Redbrick Mill is now a furniture store. 	The great thing about a thicket is that it stops any golf balls - the bad thing about a thicket is that it makes it difficulty to get a photo of the golfers - they are using the Hanging Heaton Golf Club. 	... descending this muddy bank to the wet area below - when I later realise that I'm off route I decide to find a way to the right route rather than backtrack to where I went wrong as I've gone so far. 	The KW goes along this path - I think it may be a disused railway line. 	Having crossed the KW, it's not too obvious which way the KW goes. This photo looks back at a site with camper vans that I've apprehensively just walked through. 	Looking at the OS map and the walls on the left of the photo I think this is a disused railway line. 	The KW leaves the disused railway line which continues as a cycle path across the River Calder. 	I have more navigation problems at this point. This tunnel is part of the Dewsbury-Ossett Greenway. After some map gazing, I think I have to go through the tunnel. 	Here's the tunnel entrance again. According to my mapping apps I need to go in that direction - there's a track up to the right of the tunnel - I try that. 	But this fence says this isn't the KW. However, I squeeze pass it and get to the right place. "Right" - well I think the KML file used by my two mapping apps has a point that is wrongly positioned. If I had just used the OS map I would have taken the obvious path from the tunnel entrance - it doesn't go near the point that I think is badly placed in the KML file. 	Onwards and I see this path up through the woods with a KW waymark at the junction. 	The KW reaches a T-junction with the Dewsbury-Ossett Greenway. The path coming from the left is shown in this photo. I would have got here if I'd carried straight on instead of turning round when I reached the end of the tunnel - it's a shortcut! 	And here's a view of the DOG in the opposite direction. The KW goes East along the DOG for a short distance. 	However, after a while the KW turns right (South West) along the side of this wet, muddy field. 	I mention to the horse rider the mud is making progress slow. She says her horse is having the same difficulty. 	If you zoom in on the hi-res version of this photo you'll see a muddy pond in the middle of the photo - it's difficult to get through/pass. 	At this point, the KW turns left (South West). Some tractor-like vehicle has created two grooves through the mud of the track. And although there's a grassy bank to avoid the track to begin with, it's soon replaced by a wood on both sides. Sometimes there's little mud in one/both grooves and it's easy to walk along and sometimes the mound between the two grooves is easier. The mud I've been through up until now has been child's play compared to this! 	There's a muddy pond where the KW crosses the Pildacre Mill Beck. At one point whilst negotiating this, the mud grabs both of my boots at once and I have to put both hands into the mud to avoid falling over! 	Soon after the pond, the KW leaves this track to go right (South West) and ... 	The KW goes left (South East) to go pass a sewage works and then finishes up here. 	First of three tunnels. This one goes under the Wakefield to Mirfield railway line. 	The River Calder has done a meander - a U-turn - and is now alongside the KW. 	Here's the third tunnel which is under a railway line that goes to a marsalling yard. 	The KW now runs alongside the Calder-Hebble Navigation. I take a quick look at the Figure of Three Bridge Lock which is just off the KW. 	The KW now uses this bridge to go West leaving the Calder-Hebble Navigation.
