Leeds and Liverpool: from Wigan Pier to Heath Charnock

This is the route that I took on Tuesday August 6th 2019 when walking the Leeds and Liverpool from Wigan Pier to Heath Charnock. It is 17.9K long.

	I'm choosing to start my walk along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Wigan. And I'll start at Wigan Pier. But where is it? 	The Wikipedia page explains "The pier was at the end of a narrow gauge tramway from a colliery. The wagons would be brought right to the edge of the canal to be tippled so that their contents went straight into the waiting barges. The original wooden pier is believed to have been demolished in 1929, with the iron from the tippler being sold as scrap. Because of the more recent pride in the area's heritage, a replica tippler, consisting of two curved rails, has been erected at the original location." 	This is the junction of the L&L with the Leigh Branch. To the right the L&L arrives from Liverpool. I've just come in from that direction. Ahead there's the branch to Leigh. And behind me the L&L continues to Leeds - that's the way I'm going. 	Ahead is lock 85. This is the Bottom Lock of the Wigan Locks - there are 21 in this flight - according to the Pearson's Guide I'm about to ascend 214 feet. Elsewhere I read that the locks are located in a two mile stretch of the Canal. 	Big excitement! There's a barge in lock 75 - it's going my way - but no chance of me helping them out as they have about 7 doing that already! The boater says he started at the bottom at 0830. It is now 1023. They've done about 11 locks in two hours. They are about halfway up the flight. 	I leave the towpath and descend a steep path (that is to the left of the Canal). It leads to this muddy path that goes under the Canal. The Pearson's Guide mentions the canal crossing "the trackbed of the Lancashire Union Railway (or National Cycle Route 55 as it has commendably become)".
