Leeds and Liverpool: from Barnoldswick to Gargrave

This is the route that I took on Friday August 16th 2019 when walking the Leeds and Liverpool from Barnoldswick to Gargrave. It is 12.9K long.

KML for the above route as a line
KML for the above route as a series of points

Here are some photos I took. If you want to see a photo in hi-res, click on it.

As the forecast is for heavy rain from 10am onwards and I want to do 7.4 miles, I decide to leave my hotel in Shipley at 0545. Today, I'm starting at Barnoldswick. It's 0727 when I start walking.
Wikipedia points out that "Barnoldswick with 12 letters, is one of the longest place names in the United Kingdom to contain no repetition of letters". It also gives three 13 letter place names and one 14 letter place name.

Here's that transmitter again. Now it's to the South of the Canal. In fact I've just walked the bit of the Canal next to the stone wall that is at the bottom of this photo. So the Canal has done a loop to get to where I took the photo.

Here's another loop. I've walked from left to right along the middle of this photo to the top of another valley and then come back to here. So including the loop mentioned earlier, there are four places on the Canal where you can look South and see this transmitter! These places can be seen on this map. On that map my current position is shown by the red pushpin and the transmitter is at the end of the road that is due South of my current position. If you zoom in on the end of the road you'll see the transmitter.

There's one on board the boat and three operating the locks. So I don't hang around to help out as there are plenty of hands to do the locks! In my opinion, it would make more sense for one of those three people to be preparing the next lock - filling it and opening the gates when it's full.

As we are emptying lock 33, I point out that there is a lot of water filling it up! The top gates are leaky.

I had planned to finish today's walk at the bridge near to the next lock (lock 32) which is in the middle of Gargrave. My plans to help the owner of the boat through lock 32 are thwarted as the towpath from bridge 169A to lock 32 is closed. Once again I haven't been checking the Canal and River Trust's web page of stoppages!

So my walk along the Canal ends at bridge 169A (just down from lock 33). I hope to restart at bridge 170 and lock 32 tomorrow. In order to catch my bus back to the hotel I'll have to walk along the noisy A65 into the middle of Gargrave. Grhh!

In the middle of Gargrave, there's this sign next to the bus stop. I'm back on the Pennine Way again!
