Leeds and Liverpool: from Keighley to Shipley

This is the route that I took on Tuesday August 20th 2019 when walking the Leeds and Liverpool from Keighley to Shipley. It is 10.4K long.

	Today I'm starting the walk from Riddlesden (near Keighley) and I'm walking to Shipley (where my hotel is). On the way are the Bingley 5 and Bingley 3 which are "staircases" of 5 and 3 locks. For boats descent is between 0800 and 1000 and ascent is between 1000 and 1200. I fear I'm not going to see many boats doing it as I'm too late to get there in time. So I'm back at bridge 197 which is today's swing bridge No. 1 - will today's count of swing bridges beat yesterday's 11? - we shall see! 	The Pearson's Guide tells the tale of how on 17th May 1952 there was a massive breach in the canal's bank. Luckily there were three maintenance men working nearby. 	Looking down at the Bingley 5 from the top lock. The Canal below looks a long way down. In the distance there is the Damart factory. 	The Bingley 5 is a "staircase" of 5 locks. A "staircase" is a flight of locks where, when you're going down, the lower gate of one lock is also the higher lock of the next lock. 	With a staircase, you have to think about the order to fill/empty the locks. For example, if you approach the staircase from below and you find the bottom lock empty, then you need to fill the other locks before filling the bottom lock. 	The Bingley 5 changes the height of the Canal by 60 feet or 18 metres. It opened in 1774. 	The paths of the Canal, the A650 and the Leeds to Skipton railway line are alongside each other. 	Here's the nemoNOO with the Bingley 3 in the background. I learn from one of the people on board that they were the only boat descending. She tells me that it took them 80 minutes. I note that there are no boats waiting to ascend - this is permitted for two hours starting in 30 minutes time, i.e., at 1000. I saw this boat at Riddlesden on day 12, at Low Snaygill on day 11, at the Bank Newton Locks on day 9 and near to Reedley Marina on day 7. 	The A650 still accompanies the Canal but the railway has temporarily has gone further away. 	The owner of the boat says he's on his way to Liverpool - I advised hom that there are no boats ahead of him in the queue for the Bingley 3/5 - he tells me it's not the locks that hinder him - it's the swing bridges - I spend the next 10 minutes thinking about how a person on their own operates swing bridges - he's already done several and he's got a lot more to do - there are the 6 I've seen today and the 11 from yesterday.
