This sign is at Smethwick Junction. And it's decision time. I'm just come from Birmingham but ahead there's a choice of two routes. Contrary to what this sign implies they both go to Wolverhampton but for the next 7 miles or so they run in parallel before joining at Factory Junction. The one labelled "Spon Lane Junction" is the Old Main Line devised by Brindley whereas the one labelled "Wolverhampton" is the New Main Line devised by Telford. Brindley Old Main Line is more circuitous. The Pearson's Canal Companion says that after three locks it religiously "follows the 473 foot contour". Telford's route is straighter and achieves this using 6 locks. The Companion also says Telford's New Main Line "reduced the distance between Wolverhampton and Birmingham by a third". As these routes is so close together at times I just wonder how Telford got "planning permission" to carve a new route through the countryside.

Smethwick Junction is at the bottom of this map. To begin with, the New Main line takes a path to the left (West) of the Old Main Line. However, North of Spon Lane they swop positions as there's an aqueduct that carries the Old Main Line across the New Main Line.
Because the New Main Line has very long straight bits, I choose to walk the Old Main Line.
