The Canal and River Trust are gradually upgrading the towpaths on the BCN. I think this is to encourage walkers and cyclists. I think they have recently finished the towpath from Coseley to Wolverhampton. I find it boring and uninteresting and not suited to my walking boats!

As you can see, unlike the other locks of this flight, lock 20 has a single bottom gate. Pearson's Canal Companion provides an explanation. Although there are now 21 locks, "Brindley only provided twenty chambers, but the last was so deep that it caused water shortages. In 1784, the bottom lock was therefore reduced in depth and a short cutting excavated to carry the canal to a new lock built in the intervening pound. This extra lock - No. 20 - gives its identity away by having only one bottom gate."
