Dudley and Stourbridge: from Silver End to Stourport Junction

This is the route that I took on Tuesday September 18th 2018 when walking the Dudley and Stourbridge from Silver End to Stourport Junction. It is 14.9K long.

The bit from Stourbridge along the High Street back to the canal was on a bus.

	A moored boat, a sunflower garden and two chimneys. 	That looks like a railway bridge ahead. The Pearson's Canal Companion says "Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton (GWR)", i.e., the same line as went over the Park Head Viaduct yesterday, and so I wasn't expecting any track ... 	... and yet when I took a look the line looked active with a signal at yellow. After some investigation I find it's used for freight from Round Oak to Stourport Junction. 	There's a boat coming towards me. They have just lowered their heads as Brettell Lane Bridge has low headroom. 	This fence provides no access to the canal for any of the houses fronting the canal. 	There's a T-junction ahead. It's Leys Junction. The Stourbridge Canal continues to the left and immediately there is a flight of 16 locks - the Stourbridge Locks. And the canal to the right takes you to Brockmoor Junction and it's not navigable soon after that. 	This is the "Peggy Ellen" which is outside the Samson and Lion. The person on this boat mentions that he sawme last week on the Staffs and Worcs. 	Lock 7 with a side pound to the left. The Pearson's CAnal Companion says "The flight is characterised by reedy side ponds aiding and abetting water supply." The side ponds are very easy to see if you go to this area on Google Maps. 	The Pearson's Canal Companion says "The massive Red House Cone (or kiln) dates from the end of the 18th Century". This is a telephoto shot of it as I haven't got to it yet. 	This is Wordsley Junction. The Stourbridge Canal continues to Stourton Junction but to the left there's a cul-de-sac branch off to the town of Stourbridge. I decide to walk that next. 	They tell me that the towpath ceases almost immediately as the moorings in Stourbridge are secured moorings surrounded by steel fences. I take this photo through the steel fence. So I'm now in Stourbridge - I've now reached the end of the Stourbridge Arm. Rather than walking back the same way to Wordsley Junction, I've decided to take the bus. This will drop me off just before lock 13 of the Stourbridge Locks. Maybe this time I'll see some boats doing the locks. And .... 	... I arrive between locks 12 and 13 just as the "Peggy Ellen" is approaching lock 13. This was the boat which I saw earlier outside the Samson and Lion. I decide to help them down locks 13 to 16. 	I'm told the boat is 59 feet long and the canal is restricted to boats of 60 feet or less - it's a tight fit in this lock. 	Whilst helping Peggy Ellen down lock 16 (the last lock), I see Sloe arrive at Wordsley Junction, coming out of the Stourbridge Arm and making a left turn to go to Stourton Junction. 	Beyond lock 4 is Stourton Junction - this is where the Stourbridge Canal meets the Staff and Worcs Canal which I walked last week. And that's the end of this trip. I've got about 40 minutes to wait until the bus back to Wolverhampton. But en-route to the bus stop I see the Peggy Ellen and help it down locks 3 and 4.
